End of Life Care
Our promise to our community has always been that our team at Healing Hearts will be there for pets and their families at every stage of their story. Unfortunately, some stories bring us to a final chapter. A final chapter filled with love, memories, and the heartbreaking moments of saying goodbye.
Sometimes, despite all options and every ounce of care, the most compassionate choice we can offer is a peaceful goodbye. It’s a decision no one ever wants to make, but in these deeply difficult moments, we’re here to walk with you as a voice of reason and support.

Understanding When It's Time to Say Goodbye
The hardest decision a pet caregiver ever has to make is determining when it’s time to say goodbye to their beloved companions. As pet caregivers ourselves, we’ve stood in those shoes. We’ve existed in those moments where time seems to stop, and the memories of a life fulfilled come rushing back to you.
Which is why we will be right beside you, supporting you, and ensuring you have every option and answer to make an informed decision.

Is My Pet Suffering?
Making end-of-life decisions is never easy, but understanding your pet’s comfort and quality of life can help guide you. You know your pet best. If you’re unsure what the answers mean or are struggling to decide, we’re here to talk through it with you, without judgment, pressure, or rushing.
The questions below may help you recognize when your pet may be suffering:
Appetite
- Are they eating regularly and showing interest in food?
- Do they only eat with hand-feeding or coaxing?
- Have they stopped eating entirely without support, like a feeding tube?
Breathing
- Is your pet breathing comfortably at rest and during activity?
- Do they show signs of labored breathing or need oxygen support?
Enjoyment of Life
- Do they still enjoy favorite routines, toys, walks, or cuddles?
- Are those things now ignored or seem to cause distress?
Hydration
- Are they drinking enough water on their own?
- Do they rely on subcutaneous or IV fluids to stay hydrated?
Interaction & Behavior
- Do they still seek affection, respond to you, or act like themselves?
- Or have they become withdrawn, confused, or unexpectedly aggressive?
Mobility
- Can your pet get up and walk on their own?
- Do they need help moving or standing?
- Are they no longer able to move without assistance?
Neurologic Function
- Are they aware of their surroundings?
- Are seizures happening often or uncontrolled by medication?
- Do they have severe disorientation or balance problems that aren’t improving?
Pain
- Is your pet in visible or known pain?
- Can that pain be managed with medication or care at home?
