Nutrition Service
Our Nutrition Service provides individualized, evidence-based nutritional recommendations for dogs and cats with medical conditions that may benefit from specialized dietary management. Our service is led by Dr. Jose De Jesus Ruiz Romero, who is Board-Certified Small Animal Internal Medicine Specialist, and has residency training in Nutrition.

Conditions That May Benefit From a Nutrition Consultation
- Allergies to specific ingredients
- Chronic diarrhea, regurgitation, or vomiting
- Chronic kidney disease
- Copper storage liver disease
- Obesity or inappropriate weight loss
- Pancreatitis
- Protein losing diseases
- Nutrient deficiencies
- Urinary bladder stones
What to Expect During a Nutrition Consultation
During the consultation, Dr. Ruiz will review the patient’s diet history, medical history, physical exam findings, and treatment goals.
Recommendations may include:
- Selection of an appropriate commercial or home prepared therapeutic diet
- A structured feeding and calorie plan
- Adjustments based on concurrent medical conditions
- Follow-up monitoring recommendations
The availability of individualized home-prepared diet formulation may depend on the patient’s medical needs, the complexity of the case, and the type of nutritional service required. Not every patient is an appropriate candidate for a home-prepared diet.

Schedule a Nutrition Consultation
The Nutrition Service provides in-person consultations by referral only. Please speak with your pet’s family veterinarian about submitting a referral for an in-person Nutrition Consultation. Once the referral and medical records have been received, our team can assist with scheduling an appointment.
